In the glassblowing "hot shop," artists create with molten glass. In the "cold shop" the glass stays solid and cold the entire time. "Coldworking" is the practice of using "cold" processes such as cutting, grinding, and polishing glass to finish a piece or add artistic decoration.
In “Introduction to Coldworking” you will learn how to correctly use fundamental coldshop tools including the belt sander, flat lap, diamond saw, and lathe. This class takes you through the steps of setting up, adjusting, using, and cleaning each tool. You will learn how to cold work step by step as a class. Clear glass "blanks" will be provided, and you are also welcome to bring a couple ofpersonal glass items that they've made that need cold working.
This course (or equivalent proficiency) is a prerequisite to renting time in the Belger Glass Annex cold shop. Cold shop renters must pass a test before being allowed to rent.
