Call for Artists:

Artists are invited to submit work for the Sixth Annual Heartland Glass Exhibition. This exhibition was established in 2017 by Monarch Glass Studio, and Belger Arts continues this annual tradition of celebrating regional glass artists. Scroll down for submission guidelines.

The Heartland 6 exhibition opens the evening of Friday, April 5, and the artists named "Best in Show" and "Honorable Mention" will be recognized at the opening reception. Winner of "Best in Show" will be featured the following day (Saturday, April 6) at a public event held at the Belger Glass Annex.

This year's Heartland 6 guest jurors are Samantha De Tillio and Leo Tecosky.

Samantha De Tillio is a craft scholar, cross-disciplinary writer, and independent curator, with over ten years of experience working in museums, with collections, and publishing. Her expertise includes American material and visual culture with an emphasis on post-war contemporary craft and glass.

She is a 2023 winner of the Lois Moran Award for Craft Writing and is Guest Curator/Editor of New Glass Review 43, an "exhibition-in-print" for the Corning Museum of Glass.

Since 2019, De Tillio has been a Contributing Editor of Glass: The UrbanGlass Art Quarterly, where, since 2015, she has written regularly on themes of performance, gender, and ecology as it relates to glass. GLASS is the repository of her trailblazing research on glass and performance, which is featured in three articles published Summer 2022, Summer 2023, and Winter 2023/24. The scholarly triptych traces the development of performative glass from the mid-twentieth century through today.

Leo Tecosky was born in Albuquerque, NM and raised in Miami, FL, Leo Tecosky works at the intersection of cultural and craft traditions in the pursuit of knowledge of self. With a BA in Fine Arts from Alfred University and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, Leo’s work mixes deconstructed elements of hip hop with technical glass making processes. Tecosky is the recipient of the 36th annual Corning Museum Rakow Commission as well as the 2023 Maxwell/Hanrahan Award in Craft. Recent exhibitions include TECO037 at Alma’s RVA and collections by the Chrysler Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass. Tecosky lives and blows glass in Brooklyn, NY.

About Belger Arts:

Since 2000, the Belger Arts Center has encouraged viewers to explore, question, and deepen their understanding of art and of the world around them. Drawing upon the extensive John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation collection as well as a rich variety of local, national, and international artists, the Belger Arts Center has staged over 70 large-scale exhibitions that represent some of the best in contemporary art.

In 2013, Belger Arts expanded the Foundation’s commitment to the creative process by opening Belger Crane Yard Studios, an arts complex dedicated to providing studio and exhibition space for artists. A range of programming in ceramics education, in addition to the Red Star Residency program and Crane Yard Clay ceramics supply store, has made Belger a center for contemporary art.

Belger Arts opened its third location, the Belger Glass Annex (12 E. 19th Street, Kansas City, MO), to the public in October 2021. The Belger Glass Annex is the first public glass blowing studio in Kansas City of its scale and scope. The facility boasts state of the art glass blowing equipment and tools, a furnace that holds 300 pounds of molten glass, and three workstations. Program offerings include classes, public demonstrations and artist presentations, plus a visiting artist program. The Belger Glass Annex is primed to be a Midwest hub for glass art, education and appreciation, strengthening Kansas City’s reputation as an arts destination.
