Explore the art of crafting animal sculptures through handbuilding techniques, capturing the essence of your cherished pet! Simply bring a photo of your beloved companion, whether it’s a dog, cat, fish, lizard, hamster, or any other creature. This course delves into solid-building methods, detailing and texturing tools & techniques, as well as surface treatments tailored for non-functional ceramic sculpture.
Week 1: Bring images, look over / discuss example work, tool talk, begin solid-building demo, make maquette
Week 2: Continue wet-work, look at and discuss surface options, discuss hollowing out and reassembling a solid-built form
Week 3: Final day for wet work (should be finished and drying by the end of class), discuss surface texture
Week 4: Surface treatment day
Students need to bring:
-basic pottery toolkit
-serrated rib
-surface materials of choice (underglazes, paint, etc.)
-variety of paint brushes
We provide:
-20 lbs clay
-nichrome wire
-The Once-Firing (to Cone 05) required for this project *shop glazes are not included in this class, cold surface options will be encouraged/discussed
- Outside of class Studio access with the following schedule:
Monday- Thursday: 8:30am - 9pm
Friday: 8:30am - 5pm
Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 4pm
