Expand your throwing beyond the cylinder. In this second level beginner class you will learn the basics of throwing rounded (bellied out) forms and bowls. In addition, you will learn how to attach handles, use bats, and expand your decorating skills beyond simple glazes.

Skill Level : Two (Beginner-Intermediate)

Requirements: Must be able to center without assistance and pull a 4 inch tall cylinder.


This class is designed for those who can center on their own and pull a basic 4 inch tall cylinder.

Expand your throwing beyond the cylinder. In this second level beginner class you will learn the basics of throwing rounded (bellied out) forms and bowls. In addition, you will learn how to attach handles, use bats, and expand your decorating skills beyond simple glazes.


Week 1:

  • Demonstration: Throwing rounded forms and bowls on the wheel and using pottery bats.

Week 2:

  • Demonstration: Making handles, attaching things to thrown forms.

Week 3:

  • Demonstration: Trimming work on the wheel, using slip, applying underglaze to greenware.

Week 4:

  • Demonstration: Using oxides, doing wipe backs, using the spray booths.

Included with class:

  • 15 lbs cone 6 clay

  • Firings of all work made during the course

  • Studio access outside of class time during the following hours:

    Monday-Thursday 8:30AM-9:00PM, Friday 8:30AM-5:00PM, Saturday & Sunday 10:00AM-4:00PM

You will need to bring:

**We have community tools available for use, however these are not guaranteed and it is highly recommended you purchase your own**

 A basic pottery tool kit. Below are some options that can be found locally and/or online:
