Introduction to Wheel Throwing (Level One)
In this introductory class you will learn the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel. We will cover basic studio use, preparing clay, centering, pulling cylinders, trimming pieces, firing, and glazing.
Skill Level: One (Beginner)
Requirements: None - No experience required
In this introductory course you will learn the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel. We will cover basic studio use, preparing clay, centering, pulling cylinders, trimming pieces, firing, and glazing. Come learn a new skill or revisit an old hobby with this fun hands-on class.
Week 1:
Brief tour and orientation.
Demonstrations: Preparing clay (wedging) and throwing on the wheel.
Week 2:
Demonstration: Throwing with a focus on finishing work on the wheel.
Discussion on the stages of clay and drying.
Week 3:
Demonstration: Trimming work on the wheel.
Introduction to firing.
Week 4:
Demonstration: Glaze application (dipping and brushing).
Included with class:
15 lbs cone 6 clay
Firings of all work made during the course
Studio access outside of class time during the following hours:
Monday-Thursday 8:30AM-9:00PM, Friday 8:30AM-5:00PM, Saturday & Sunday 10:00AM-4:00PM
You will need to bring:
**We have community tools available for use, however these are not guaranteed and it is highly recommended you purchase your own**
