Summer Art Camp FAQ

Where are classes and art camp held?
Summer Art Camp and children's classes are held at the Belger Arts Center located at 2100 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO 64108.
Our Studio Experience for teens takes place at the Belger Crane Yard Studios located at 2011 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64108 (about a mile away from the BAC).

What is the age requirement for summer art camp?
Students between the ages of 7 and 12 can be enrolled in half- and full-day one-week sessions of Summer Art Camp. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 can be enrolled in Studio Experience, a full-day, one-week session of camp designed with older aspiring artists in mind. Classes are designed especially for these age groups and include activities such as wheel throwing, hand-building, mixed media and more.

How do I register my child?
Please register your child through our website. You will be prompted to complete all the pertinent information about your child that we’ll need for the week. The staff needs an adult contact person in case of injury, illness, or disciplinary problems. Please be sure to give a phone number where you or a responsible party can be reached during the session.

Payments can be made online or by phone by calling 816-474-7316.

Can parents visit the class?
Parents are encouraged to have lunch with children enrolled in full-day sessions and on the last day of the camp session starting at 3:15pm when artwork from the session will be showcased.

What do I do if my child misses a class or must leave early?
If your child misses a class or needs to be excused early from class you must notify staff prior to class. Instructors will not allow students to leave class early for any reason without notification from a parent or guardian.

What is the cancellation policy?
If a student is withdrawn one full week prior to the start of their Camp week, they will receive a refund or credit minus $50 of their paid class fee to cover expenses incurred while preparing for their participation.
If a student is withdrawn the weekend before their Camp week starts, they will receive half of their paid class fee as a credit toward another Camp or class.
If a student is withdrawn after the start of their Camp week, no refunds or credits will be offered.

What are the hours for before and after care and how do I enroll my child?
Before and after care is available for an additional fee. Reservations 24-hours in advance and a 1-hour minimum are required. Before care is available Monday through Friday from 8 to 9AM. After care is available from 3:30 to 5:00PM. Before and after care activities are supervised by staff, but are not supplemented with additional art lessons.

How should my child dress for camp?
The creative process can be messy at times. We ask students to “dress for mess.” Most supplies used will wash out, but some will not. We will provide paint shirts for students can wear over their clothing. Because surfaces can get wet with paint, clay, or water, students must wear closed toed shoes (absolutely no flip flops please).

What do students do for lunch?
Students in full day camp sessions are responsible for their own lunch. Please pack food that does not need to be heated up or refrigerated.

What types of electronic devices are students allowed to bring to camp (ex. cell phones, ipads, digital cameras, laptops, etc.)?
Students are discouraged from bringing electronic devices to class. Besides being distracting, the water and clay used in class can damage devices. For the safety and protection of your child’s electronics, please leave them at home. Students may use Red Star Studio’s phone if they need to contact a parent or guardian.

Are full day and half day camps separate camps?
Full-day and half- day options are available for children ages 7 through 12. Afternoon half-day camps are available for teens between the ages of 13 and 17. These options are offered to provide flexibility for parents and students. Also, we have found that some students work best in shorter class periods, while others work better with a longer class schedule. Instructors plan art lessons with these options in mind.

Where can I get a brochure or more information?
Brochures and information about Summer Art Camp and children's classes are available at both of our studio locations: 2100 Walnut Street and 2011 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO. Information is also available on our website:
