BIO

Olivia Avery grew up in a family of twelve and sought rest and stillness outdoors within plants and nature. Her functional work seeks to exemplify the spirit and energy coming from the plants through color, rhythm, and pattern. Her work is primarily wheel-thrown, and uses hand-painted, slip, and underglaze trailing to decorate intricate plant motifs on her pottery. She has been working with clay for nearly 9 years and currently resides in Memphis, TN.

ARtist Statement

I am embarking down a path to bring us back to connection, nature, and harmony. My work asks the viewer to slow down, to participate in the moment and pay attention to time passing by. I believe our connection to nature holds this same effect. As many of us spend our time inside, my goal is bring the outdoors in. I use intricate plant motifs on functional pottery to put leaves or tree rings into our hands and up to our mouths. My work and my being are fueled by nature in surface and the human body in form. This body of work is predominantly wheel thrown, hand painted, slip and underglaze trailed. The relationship between humans and nature, especially plants, has always astounded me.
