Bio

Originally trained as a carpenter, Mathew comes from a long line of skilled craftsmen and craftswomen. A chance encounter with a handmade pot in a friend's kitchen led him to the pottery studio and to a new way of working with his hands. His work is an ongoing effort to integrate his ideals with the purpose and company functional pots offer.

Artist Statement

Making pottery is a way to channel my energy. Motivated by environmental concerns my work aims to be respectful of the natural world—consideration and sustainability defines the work while textures and contrast characterize the pots. Small-batch earthenware clay and simple glaze ingredients combine in a soda kiln to produce pottery that is honest and human. The end result is a quiet harmony between the maker, the material and the process that’s meant to accompany the user’s daily rituals.
