MARCH 9 & 10, 2019
Jim Connell and Paula Smith
Demonstration and/or Hands-On
$85 for one day of demonstrations
$180 for two days with hands-on
10am to 4pm, both days
Join us for a weekend filled with the creativity of the Connell-Smith family! Jim and Paula met while attending Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) and have since pursued a life in clay together. Jim is a revered potter whose use of faceted functional form and sandblasted glazed surfaces has earned him the title of one of the masters of the contemporary teapot. Paula’s work is often more sculptural, rich in color and vibrant with life. She also animates functional form with the use of animal imagery and sculptural components.
On Saturday, working side by side, these two artists will demonstrate their techniques of how they make their fantastic work. Jim will focus on wheel-thrown pieces that are then faceted while discussing successful glazing techniques. Paula will focus on handbuilding pieces into whimsical animal inspired works.
On Sunday, the demonstrations continue as well as hands-on time to work in the studio alongside the artists.
On Saturday evening, Jim will give a special presentation about the History of Tea and the Teapot followed by a reception to view and visit the work exhibited by Jim and Paula as well as their daughter, our own Foundation Resident Alum, Emily Connell.
