Abby Callaghan

Bio

Abby Callaghan is an artist and educator based in Kansas City. Her work is primarily wheel-thrown ceramic with an emphasis on functional work. Inspired by liminal spaces, Bauhaus, and Brutalism, her work can be recognized by bright color gradients, striking forms, and a regular circle motif. She has been working with clay for 16 years, receiving her BFA in 2017 from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MAT from the University of Central Missouri in 2019. You can find her work in the Ken Ferguson teaching collection at KCAI, at the Delta Lounge in the new KC International Airport, and at local juried shows like Art Westport and the KC Clay Guild Annual Membership Exhibition. 

Artist Statement

I make work both functional and decorative that strives to find tranquility in the image of atmosphere and space. I use colored gradients and circles to evoke the sunset, sunrise, moons, and space. Inspired by brutalism, liminal spaces, bauhaus and many other artistic styles, I desire to replicate an atmosphere of quiet serenity and the feeling of existence without observation of the self.
