WORKSHOPS

Upcoming WOrkshops

Saturday, October 12
and Sunday, October 13
10am - 4pm both days

ARCHITECTure for the Table
with veronica watkins

@ Belger Crane Yard Studios, 2011 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO

This weekend is split into two workshops.

Both days will start with demonstration in the first half of the day and then move to hands-on in the afternoon. This series is a great option for those interested learning both/either/or forming and surfacing techniques.

On Saturday at 4:30 pm, Veronica will give an Artist Presentation about her work. A reception will follow in the gallery where she will have pieces available for purchase until 6pm.

Saturday: Throwing and Altering
Veronica will demonstrate her techniques for throwing and altering. Whether she’s squaring a cup after it’s been freshly thrown or paddling a basket to get the perfect edge, you’ll get all the insights that make this work unique and more than round. Participants are encouraged to bring their Surform (rasp/cheese grater) and a couple of extra bats. We’ll be using the Drying Room to get the most of our time in the afternoon.

Sunday: Surface Decoration
Surface can be pretty intimidating, especially after spending all that time on the form. Veronica will spend some time demoing and talking about the non-glaze surface she uses to give her pots a warm, soft touch. She’ll also highlight the way that she breaks up the surface of her forms in an intuitive way that feels right and helps her pots look and good as they feel.

About the Artist:
Watkins grew up in the KCMO area were she was encouraged artistically from an early age. She received a BFA from Northwest Missouri State University in 1996 and followed that with an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2000. After relocating a number of times inthe Midwest, she and her family returned to Maryville, Missouri where she is a wife, mother, studio artist and tenure-track professor of ceramics at Northwest Missouri State University.

Late April 2020

Thrown and Assembled: The Art of Porcelain
with Shawn Spangler

@ Belger Crane Yard Studios, 2011 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO

This weekend has two sections to it.

During the first day, Shawn will demonstrate the techniques he uses to create the component parts that he assembles into his elaborate pottery forms. The second day will be a hands-on portion that will allow participants to try the techniques for themselves.

Saturday: Demonstration
Shawn will spend the day demonstrating his techniques for making pieces that will be assembled into larger, beautiful pots. Anyone who has a thing for “measuring twice, cutting once” is going to LOVE this workshop. For those who enjoy the world of the precise and the handmade, come and meet your people.

Sunday: Hands-On
Now it’s your turn to make parts and assemble them into amazing pots! Don’t forget your heat gun and calibers. This is sure to be a perfect way to step up your game with one of the best at your side giving you pointers.

About the Artist:
Shawn Spangler, a Pennsylvanian native, is a ceramic artist currently living and working in Hawaii. Spangler's work, draws inspiration from craft, industrial design and digital technology. Spangler holds an Masters of Fine Arts degree from Alfred University and recently finished a residency at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA. He has shown internationally and has taught workshops at numerous art centers, colleges and universities throughout the United States. Spangler is currently an Assistant Professor at The University of Hawai'i. His wheel thrown porcelain forms can be complex, yet clearly articulated, oftentimes created through the combination of multiple parts. The forms are reminiscent of both Koryo dynasty and Song dynasty, examples he observed as a resident artist in China in 2002. He states, ”My work is an amalgamated map of the world I reflect upon. Producing pottery is a kind of play; a regenerative act ripe with reverence, revealing the human hands enduring connection to creativity. It guides us through stories of our past remaining as a cultural signifier to help us locate where we once were and where we are going."
