Bio

My name is Joey Bourdow. I was born in Saginaw, Michigan. I moved to Kansas for work in 2011. I currently live in Lawrence, where I graduated from University of Kansas with a BFA and a minor in psychology.  I am a dedicated visual artist with a decorated background in a variety of artistic mediums, however my focus is on sculpture and painting. I am currently pursuing a master’s in art therapy and in clinical counseling at Emporia State University. When I create a work of art it is personal to how I am feeling. I work a lot with the physical and metaphorical aspects of emotions as a form of expression in my work. I am inspired to do this in my work because I have anxiety and a panic disorder, so understanding, and expressing emotions is a major part of my life and recovery.

Artist Statement

My artwork is a way to escape the stressors of everyday life. My work has multi-media aspects that are based on my emotions. I let my emotions at the time contribute to the outcome of the piece. I draw inspiration from dreams, psychology, and art movements, such as the surrealists. My current work is influenced by my journey in my art therapy master’s program.

My work allows me to express the emotions I cannot put into words. As I work on a piece it helps me process the world around me. When people look at my art, I hope they can recognize something in the work and process their own similar emotions or spark a new emotion for them to explore.
