Advanced Color Application – Additive and Subtractive Methods

Advanced Color Application – Additive and Subtractive Methods
GLASSBLOWING MASTERCLASS WITH EKIN AYTAC & JOSH DAVIDS
FRIDAY - TUESDAY, MARCH 6 - 10
Classes have a maximum of 6 students and a minimum of 4 students
* Requirements: Glass 2 or equivalent
This five-day masterclass, presented by Ekin Aytac and Josh Davids, is designed for glass artists ready to elevate their glass artwork through a deep exploration of both additive and subtractive color application techniques. You will engage in complex layering processes in the hot shop and precision manipulation in the cold shop, culminating in the creation of unique, multi-layered glass objects.
Course Focus and Objectives
The core of this course is the fluid transition between the heat of the hot shop and the precision of the cold shop. You will learn to intentionally build color layers (additive) and then strategically remove them (subtractive) to reveal, blend, and manipulate the color matrix within their glass.
Additive (Hot Shop) Techniques
We will begin by establishing a strong foundation in complex color application, focusing on techniques that build and layer the glass object:
Layered Overlays: Mastering the controlled application of multiple color gathers.
Stuff Cups & Inside Color: Techniques for incorporating and encapsulating internal color elements and controlling the density of surface layers.
Advanced Cane and Murrine Use: Integrating pre-made color components for intricate, repeatable patterns.
Subtractive (Cold Shop) Techniques
Transitioning to the cold shop, you will learn methods to strategically manipulate and reveal the internal color structure:
Precision Saw Cutting: Utilizing diamond saws to create controlled, flat planes and precise windows into the color layers.
Engraving and Carving: Employing flexible shaft tools and diamond wheels for fine-line detail and controlled surface texture.
Sandblasting: Mastering resist application and variable pressure to create frosted textures, deep relief, and precise color-depth removal.
What You Will Create
Moving seamlessly between the two studios, you will apply what you’ve learned to create new and unique glass art objects that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of color depth and surface manipulation. The ultimate goal is to move beyond simple decoration, treating the glass object as a canvas where color is not just applied, but woven, sculpted, and brought into dramatic conversation with light.
