Free Artist Talk with Visiting Resident Hayun Surl
Saturday, July 18, at 11am at the Belger Crane Yard Gallery
Join us for a FREE Artist Talk with visiting ceramic artist Hayun Surl! Learn about his process, personal history, and projects he’s undertaken during his residency at the Belger Crane Yard Studios.
Originally from Korea, Surl spent two years on an apprenticeship in Korean traditional pottery and kiln design before he received an MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Angelo State University in Texas.
Surl’s work blends Eastern and Western techniques and philosophies, embracing and challenging traditional norms. He explains, "I see my work as the creation of artifacts—objects that draw from my personal history and the archives I have collected and created."
During his residency at Belger Crane Yard Studios, Surl is developing a new body of work focused on exploring the fluidity of cultural identity through large-scale ceramic sculptures.
Free Artist Talk and Glass Blowing Demo with Emily Potter
Free Artist Talk: Thursday, September 3, starting at 6pm at Belger Crane Yard Gallery
Free Glass Blowing Demo: First Friday, September 4 from 6 to 8pm at the Belger Glass Annex
Join us for a FREE Artist Talk and Glass Blowing Demonstration this September with Glass Annex Program Coordinator, Emily Potter!
Potter is originally from Northwest Ohio and received a BFA from Bowling Green State University. Influenced by the drape and flexibility of textiles alongside the rigidity and light of glass, her work explores the tension and dialogue between these opposing qualities.
Learn about Potter’s multi-step process and inspirations during her Artist Talk and watch her in action on First Friday as she leads the glass blowing demo.
This programming is in conjunction with Potter’s special topic class, Layer, Line, and Luster: The Multi-Fire Glass Journey.
