Proximity and Practice: Belger Arts’ Thirteenth Annual Resident Exhibition

June 5 - September 5, 2025
at Belger Crane Yard Gallery

First Friday, June 5: Opening Reception 6pm to 8pm and Artist Remarks at 6:30PM.

Proximity and Practice features work by Ceramic Resident Artists Sara Alfieri, Erin Drake, Hunter Guidoboni, Zoey McLeod, Hannah Schelb, and Warren Van Ryzin, and, for the first time, work by Glass Resident Artists Michael Carson and Tyler Suter. Over the past year, these eight artists have pushed their studio practices, exploring how proximity—or lack thereof—shapes their connections to family, community, online spaces, and the physical world.

Belger Arts continues to host national and international artists through its Artists in Residence programs, offering ceramic and glass artists the opportunity to expand their body of work or embark on special projects beyond their existing studio practice.

FEATURING WORK BY

Sara Alfieri employs digital fabrication software with traditional hand-building methods, examining how geometric design and cylindrical forms reflect the interplay between architecture and human experience. Michael Carson, inspired by traditional Venetian techniques, creates intricate glass vessels with sculptural twists that mirror his life as a nomadic artist; each move influences his evolving artistic direction. Erin Drake constructs imagined ecosystems, inviting viewers to discover moments of joy through intricate arrangements of flora and fauna. Hunter Guidobani, drawing from conversations with family, explores the tension between hope and fear, using sculpture to represent the helplessness felt when living in proximity to powerful systems. Zoey McLeod roots her objects in a close relationship with nature and handmade processes, delving into the temporal nature of humans, seasonal cycles, and the inevitability of decay. Hannah Schelb investigates self-image, perception, and authorship by collaborating with the Belger Arts community on small figurative sculptures, highlighting how physical and emotional proximity to a creative community shapes artistic practice. Tyler Suter leverages the fluidity of glass, taking inspiration from cymatics, chemical reactions, SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images, and organic patterns to capture moments from the natural world and explore the intersection of art and science. Warren Van Ryzin adapts ancient ceramic imagery to bridge the gap between past and present, illustrating how the proximity to online culture influences interpretations of his work through a modern cryptic dialect.
