Artist Statement

As a ceramicist and mixed-media artist, I am motivated to explore topics such as the natural world, biology, pornography, gender constructs, and violence. Sex and death are driving points from which I create. I also allow my life experiences to inform my work and to incorporate an autobiographical aspect. When looking at the work of other artists I am most inspired by the work of Surrealists and Deconstructionists both visually and conceptually. I also take inspiration from artists and crafters within my own community, and create objects that are grounded in our current reality.

Although my primary focus over the past four years has been functional pottery and developing my process in that area, I use a wide variety of materials and skills to create art. Some of the mediums I exploit include: fiber art in the form of embroidery, digital collage and photography transferred to synthetic fabric, sewing and garment making.
