Katherine Moes
Bio
Katherine Moes is based in Kansas City, Missouri. She is new to the Midwest, after having spent most of her life in the Pacific Northwest. While a maker and artist for as long as she can remember, she did sidestep into the sciences during college (BSc Biology), only to return to her high school love of clay after having started a family, and completing a Science Illustration Certificate. Five years ago, she committed fully to ceramics, and after her move to the Midwest, has been throwing clay as a member of the Belger Crane Yard studio.
Artist Statement
I am drawn to quiet, simple, and understated beauty — making pieces that hold a peaceful presence in one's home, and exploring organic shapes and natural textures with my hands. Working with Belger Crane Yard’s gas kiln, the atmospheric fire participates in the finish of the pieces. Most of my work is neutral in tone, a manifestation of my love of the dry desert landscape of the Southwest. My process involves both wheel thrown and hand-built techniques. Working with clay is a peaceful and mindful process; and I am incredibly thankful for the time I spend on this craft.
