Katherine Berg
Bio
Katherine Berg was born in Washington, D.C., and currently resides in central New York. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Ithaca College. She began working with clay in 2018, when she took multiple wheel throwing classes and then became a member at The Clay School, a local community pottery studio. Katherine later began working for The Clay School as a studio assistant, as well as working as an assistant in the owner’s private studio. Here, she learned skills such as plaster mold making and slipcasting, as well as kiln firings and general studio upkeep.
In 2024, Katherine built a private studio at her home to enable a higher volume of production. Currently, she sells her work primarily at local art festivals and markets throughout the year. In addition to her artistic career, she has a day job as a piercing apprentice at Ithaca Piercing & Tattoo.
Artist Statement
My pottery practice seeks to create objects imbued with life; I combine ambulatory forms with bright, colorful glazes to make work filled with fun and funky personality; pieces that may wander off if you look away.
It is my view that clay, as a medium, has its own voice. It can be both subtle and loud, but always provides its own input into the creative process. Working with it is a cooperative endeavor; the artist must listen when the medium speaks and give feedback. In this way, clay feels very alive to me. I strive to make pieces that express the liveliness that I feel within my clay. I work out of my home studio, where I utilize both wheel throwing and hand building, as each technique contributes uniquely to my pursuit of lively pottery.
