Hannah Bowlus

Bio

Hannah Bowlus is a locally based multimedia artist specializing in one-off lighting designs and larger scale installations. She most often works with hand-blown and cast glass, wood, metal, digital fabrication, and various electronic systems. Bowlus uses traditional and modern processes to design and fabricate her sculptural lighting pieces. She applies these skills more broadly by working with other artists and designers to physically realize their ideas.

Artist Statement

I am deeply intrigued by the unintended beauty that emerges from industrially and scientifically engineered parts and systems, things that are designed to serve a specific function with few aesthetic considerations. The purpose is utilitarian: to carry out a task efficiently with precision and durability. This method of thinking is not generally considered inspirational or artistic and this is why I find the aesthetic outcomes all the more inspiring. The forms created using scientific methods are determined by mathematical formulas and logic. They reveal the innate patterns present in our daily lives that are hidden behind complex math problems and physics equations. I enjoy the challenge in finding the mathematical solution to visually balancing the form of a new piece. Using glass and other industrial materials to realize these inspired forms ties together the logical and the beautiful. For me, the glass-making process and the detailed fabrication of systems require a scientific approach and a logical list of steps to create something delicate and beautiful.
