Artist Statement
Emma Price, a queer artist from New Jersey, has found love in the technique of Nerikomi, the layering of pigmented porcelain in order to make abstract patterns and designs. Through trial, error, play, and experimentation, she has found new ways to work with her intricate slabs that can take up to 4 hours to create. She puts her hand stained clay patterns on the potter’s wheel to add shape and form to the cylinders, which allows the design to stay clear while being stretched to its limits.
Emma uses this labor-intensive technique to process emotions and practice patience. She uses color and pattern to express those feelings, along with her love for the process. She believes it is extremely important in today’s climate for queer art to be loud, fun, and full of love. She currently focuses on functional homewares while believing that every day rituals deserve a special touch of art.
