Emily Yurkevicz
BIO
Emily Yurkevicz (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist from Brattleboro, Vermont whose work has been exhibited and published both domestically and internationally. She is an Assistant Professor in Sculpture at Grinnell College.
Through her work, she investigates process, repetition, lifespans, queer and gendered labor and material storytelling. Her work ranges across a variety of mediums from traditional fiber techniques to sculptural casting and woodworking. Her works are primarily large scale, site-specific installations which are comprised of amassed precious objects creating tension between weight, negative space, and the layered identities of memory.
Artist Statement
Our collective well-being depends on a holistic return to small-scale processes and sustainable materials, to prioritize skills-based knowledge. In my own practice, I strive to use only biodegradable, responsibly harvested materials, and increasingly incorporate post-consumer recycled content in my processes and finished works. My research will continue to call attention to systems of invisible labor and the fragility of our human bodies in relation to our wounded ecosystems.
