Brenda Jones
Bio
Brenda Jones is a contemporary sculptor who lives and works in Colorado Springs. She grew up in southeast Kansas in the 1960s, and her work pays homage to the gender roles embedded in that time and rural American place. Her sculptures are ceramic or sewn fibers with narrative imagery on the surface that appears nostalgic and delicate.
She earned a Bachelor’s of Art Education at Wichita State University as well as a Master’s of Art in Art History and Ceramics. She has taught these subjects in both Kansas and Colorado and is currently an artist with Think360 in Denver, CO.
Jones’ artwork has been shown in exhibits across the U.S. She has received scholarships to study at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, CO, and Fulbright travel studies to both Argentina and Japan. Most recently, she was a short-term ceramics resident at Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana.
Artist Statement
I enjoy the line between sculpture and functional work. While these pieces are functional and food safe, I do see them as walking the line of sculpture with the exaggerated handles and lids. Most of my fully sculptural work focuses on issues of a more political nature. In the past year, I have found myself gravitating toward purposely searching for joy or humor in life due to a complex and stressful social climate. Therefore, these pieces focus on fun, a respite from the world. The works are overfired terra cotta to ^01 with slip transfers, underglazes, stains, and glazes.
