Hot Shop
The hot shop is the heart of glassblowing, where artists work with molten glass at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F. This space includes equipment like furnaces for melting raw glass, glory holes for reheating during shaping, and annealers for slowly cooling finished pieces to prevent cracking.
In the hot shop, artists gather molten glass on blowpipes or punty rods, then use tools and techniques such as blowing, spinning, and sculpting to create forms while the material is still glowing and pliable. It's a high-energy, fast-paced environment that demands coordination, timing, and precision.
Cold Shop
The cold shop is where glass is shaped, refined, and finished after it has cooled and hardened. This space is equipped with tools like diamond saws, flat grinders, belt sanders, lathes, and sandblasters, which allow artists to cut, carve, engrave, or polish their work.
Processes in the cold shop can add texture, detail, or optical effects, and are often used to clean up edges or surfaces that can't be perfected while the glass is hot. It’s a quieter, more methodical environment that plays a crucial role in bringing a glass piece to completion.
