Are you ready to take your surface design skills to the next level? Do you want to learn how to make strong decorative compositions on clay vessels? In this 4-week class, participants will learn and explore the fundamentals of design through slide presentations, completing group exercises, collages, sketching and homework assignments. We will apply these learned concepts to hands-on pottery projects using 3 basic slab-built forms: the tile, the cylinder and the cone. The class will use cone 5 white clay and underglaze surface techniques to create dynamic pieces that look good from any angle. The concepts and techniques taught in class can be applied to any forming or firing methods the student wishes to pursue. Some experience with clay and handbuilding will be helpful but is not necessary. Bring your sketchbook and a willingness to learn and explore.

Week 1 - Flat is Fab: This class will be an introduction to basic design principles.
Week 2 - Planning Ahead: This class will focus special attention to planning compositions for flat forms like tiles and plates using the aid of templates.
Week 3 - In the Round: This class will focus on imagery and compositions for volumetric forms in-the-round.
Week 4 - Wrap-Up: This final class will review what we have learned and made.
