Sculpting A Portrait Bust

In this workshop, you will learn how to sculpt a ¾ life-sized bust, using solid and coil-building techniques. We will begin by building a bust based on general human proportions.  Later we will hollow it out and add personal details, such as facial features and hair.

We will use stoneware clay, simple armatures, and basic sculpting tools.  Bring in large photographs or 8.5”x 11” Xeroxes (both a straight-on view and a profile, if possible) to work from.  We also encourage working from your imagination to create one-of-a-kind fantasy portraits.  We'll work on different fundamentals of sculpting a portrait from measuring head proportions, to capturing expressions, to mimicking hair texture. You will gain experience working with a variety of hand-building techniques and tools, and have the opportunity to create a unique and impactful work of art.
